"We're not trying to build a shopping plaza here, we're trying to put together a community."
—Stephen Soler, president of GLDC (to Sen. Joe Lieberman, as the senator took his first tour of the G&B site)
And vibrant communities need places to gather and play.
The master plan for the new village center offers multiple ways for people to socialize. Besides the many pedestrian trails, walkways, sidewalks and pedestrian bridges, there will be areas for people to live, work, dine out, shop, dance, exercise, catch a train, swim, see a show or attend a civic event. Maybe even go fishing in the 12-acre pond or in the Norwalk River!
Restaurants will be chosen that suit the needs and tastes of the surrounding community.
The development will have a state-of-the-art health club facility, complete with a 50-meter pool.
A 20,000-square-foot performing arts center will house a "black box" theatre along with, possibly, a music and dance school. The center will be equipped to cater events-civic and otherwise-so that the space can be utilized year-round. The theatre will be managed by the Wire Mill Arts Foundation, a local organization that's delighted to be giving Redding residents a long-desired place to congregate.
Local artists will have venues where they can show their work, as well as loft-style apartments where they can afford to both work and live.
And for those who like their playgrounds slightly larger, there's always the train to New York. The reopened Georgetown train station on the Metro North Commuter Railroad (New Haven line) will be at most a ten-minute walk from the outermost edge of the village.
